The next morning, I feel a twinge of excitement pass through me as Belle’s car pulls through the gates of my grandmother’s estate. I rush out to meet her. When she steps out of her car, she’s in a white sundress and gold sandals, a far cry from the t-shirt I’m used to seeing her in. My heart rate speeds up. With her hair cascading freely down her back, she looks like one of the angels in my grandmother’s collection. Surreal. Flawless. Breathtaking.

When Belle steps inside the house behind me, her eyes grow wide as they roam across every surface. “You know I’ve literally wanted to come inside this house all my life. It always seemed so magical.”

“Well, Grandma believed there was magic here and she’s got all sorts of treasures squirreled away.” I head toward the front room, but Belle doesn’t follow. Instead, she lingers at a display of old photo frames on the wall next to the kitchen head tipped forward and focused. “Thanks again for coming today. You’re the perfect person to help me sort this out. Ready?”

“This has to be you! Look at your adorable grin. You look like a baby in this picture. You’re so excited to… wait is that Santa Paws Pet Rescue? How old were you here?” Belle points at the photo of Grandma and me at the ribbon-cutting ceremony that changed the course of my life.

“Seventeen,” I answer without turning to look. I remember everything about that day and I don’t want to see the photo. “Come on, let’s get started.” My palms sweat as I try to urge Belle to move on but she persists.

“The other day, you acted like you’d never heard of Santa Paws. Why?”

I take a deep breath. I have to give her something here, my chest tightens. I don’t want her to see my flaws, at least not yet because I really like her and don’t want her to think less of me. Belle looks at me, blinking, and I can tell, she’s not ready to let me off the hook for a response.

“My grandmother was a patron of Santa Paws Pet Rescue. It was her, well, our idea actually. I was wandering Candy Cane Forest when I came across an abandoned litter of kittens. I wanted to keep them all. I was only fifteen at the time and they looked so sweet and helpless. Grandma and I gathered them up into a box and took them to the shelter only to find out that if they were lucky enough to be adopted out, they’d have to spend several dreary weeks in the cold shelter alone first.”

I swallow a lump in my throat and Belle’s mouth turns down into a tiny, sympathetic frown.

I continue, “It was heartbreaking. They had these tiny metal cages with multiple animals in each one. We left them because we didn’t have any choice, but I never forgot the feeling. They just wanted somewhere to belong. You know, someone to love them. That started our journey toward opening Santa Paws Pet Rescue.
